CDCL Online League - 2020/21 Autumn Season

For the Autumn of the 2020-21 Season, the Coventry & District Chess League is running an Online League, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. This is, following a backdrop of a very successful trial league in the Summer, where a summary can be found here, [link].

The Online League will consist of two divisions, an Open Division, and a U140 Division - open to regular and new chess teams. The time control will be 15 minutes plus 10 second increment.

The deadline for entries to Colin Green (League Chairman, and Online Chess organiser) is Monday 5th October, who may also be emailed for additional details [colin284green@googlemail.com].

Full details of the league may be found here: https://covchessleague.blogspot.com/p/online.html

CDCL Summer 2020 Online Chess League [Trial]

Here are the final results of the August 2020 Trial Online Chess League.

Congratulations to the University of Warwick who won all of their games.

A total of 54 different players represented the 6 competing clubs. I think it's been a great success, without which the next stage might not have been possible.

On this note I have almost completed my proposals for the October League, which should be with you very soon.

Thanks and best wishes,
Colin.

COVENTRY & DISTRICT CHESS LEAGUE UPDATE FROM THE CHAIRMAN, AUGUST 2020

I hope I find you all as well as can be expected at this time.  Our thoughts are still focused on the pandemic and everything must be done to ensure that everyone is safe and as comfortable as possible when the time comes for more social interaction to take place.

Although not much seems to be happening on the local chess scene, the Management Committee of the Coventry & District Chess League have continued to meet on Zoom approximately once a month.

Our conclusion at present is that there is no immediate prospect of a return to over-the-board competitive chess in the near future and that this may well be the case at least up until the end of this year. Consequently our normal competitive season which starts at the end of September will be delayed.  Our congress which is scheduled for 6th December is still in the calendar but is increasingly unlikely to take place. Our AGM date has also come and gone so this too is postponed until such time as we are able to meet together.

However, if our season is delayed there may still be the prospect of chess in the first half of 2021.  This of course is dependent upon circumstances and how league members feel about a return to chess, but when the time comes your club and league organisers will be in a position to respond.

Nevertheless internet chess is an alternative. This form of chess is not to everyone's taste. You do of course need a computer and there are always issues over the time limit.  It may be either too fast or too slow.

With this in mind the League has established a trial online league. It will take place on Tuesdays starting from 4th August and run for 5 weeks.  All of the Coventry League clubs are involved and if you have not yet signed up to take part your club organisers will be very pleased to hear from you.  Hopefully this will be a success and consequently
repeated.

If you have any thoughts about this or any other matters regarding chess in the Coventry & District Chess League I would be very pleased to hear form you.  Alternatively you could contact your club organiser(s) directly.

Best wishes,
Colin Green.

COVENTRY CHESS LEAGUE MAY 2020 UPDATE

The Coventry Chess League remains suspended due to the present Covid 19 pandemic but as Chairman of the League I thought I would update you on the situation as your committee sees it.

It seems that there is no immediate prospect of over the board chess restarting any time soon.  It might well be that the pubs and social clubs that many of us use as venues are among the last places to reopen.  Nevertheless your committee recently 'met' on Zoom to discuss what the future might look like and to be prepared to be in a position to restart when it is safe to do so.

With this in mind I would like to communicate to all members of the Coventry League our intention to continue playing chess in the 2020-21 season even if it takes a different form to that which we have known previously. We also plan to complete 2019-20 with the three outstanding matches to decide the final three tournaments.
If over the board chess is not possible then there will be an online presence for the Coventry League.

Therefore please keep your Tuesdays free during our normal Autumn/Winter playing season as there will be some form of activity.  The Coventry League committee will continue to 'meet' online and we will be consulting with all of our clubs as to how to develop in the future.
You might also wish to note that at present the 3rd Coventry Chess League Congress due for Sunday 6th December 2020 is still in the diary.

Many thanks and best wishes.
