PRESS RELEASE
Coventry, Leamington, and surrounding area / 01 May 2021
The Coventry League and Leamington League came together during the Spring to run an online chess League. In the background of Queen's Gambit, and the City of Culture celebrations, it was crucial to keep local chess vibrant throughout the pandemic, and bring together all the clubs from both Leagues together.
The joint league was a barnstorming success (concluding in April). It brought together thirty teams across three divisions, hailing from across the district area, including five junior teams. A big thank you, goes to all 200 chess players who played in the League, the Team Managers, the Fairplay and Grading Sub-Committees, and of course, Colin Green (Tournament Controller), Ben Graff (Chair), and Malcolm Harding (Secretary) for making this a great success.
Nuneaton A was Division 1 Champions, with Kenilworth A runner-up, and Shirley & Wythall A in third place. Shirley & Wythall B won Division 2, Banbury B was runner-up, with University of Warwick B in third place. Division 3 was won by Solihull, with Sutton Coldfield B runner up, and University of Warwick D on third.

The joint League Steering Committee has now resolved to run two events for the Summer.
(1) An Individual Summer Rapidplay Tournament, beginning on Tuesday 8th February. To be played on Lichess (free) across six weeks, with the caveat that if both players wish to play over-the-board, the League would encourage this (where the law allows), every Tuesday. Deadline for entries, Monday 7th February: [https://tinyurl.com/CL2021SRT]
(2) A Junior Summer Cup, beginning on Wednesday 23rd June, a team event lasting around 5 weeks, played at 7pm, every Wednesday. Deadline for entries, Monday 14th June: [https://tinyurl.com/CLJuniorSummerCupEntry]
